Nokia's CEO Says Company is Working on "successor devices" to the Lumia 900

The Windows scene is about to go on full tilt in regards to Nokia and their line-up of Windows powered smartphones. Nokias CEO, Stephen Elop, sat down with Pocket-Lint at this years CES and laid out a plan of "successor devices" after the Lumia 900. Phones, as he said, with "different shapes, sizes, and different configurations.... There is a lot more to watch.”

The strategy is to keep the excitement going and announce devices at short and steady intervals enabling them to build out their portfolio until years end. He goes on to say "A year from now, I want the story to be a bit more about, OK, this third eco-system, it's in play, this is happening. There will be a big raging debate about it, but having a more balanced perspective that there is a third contender that clearly is in the game."

When questioned on the idea of Nokia and Microsoft resting on their laurels once they become a top contender in the smartphone market, Elop says "I don't think that day ever comes. The minute we believe that we don't need to do that, I think that history would show that that's the minute that you then fail. I think that it is going to be constantly very aggressive in terms of marketing and positioning. Most importantly, very aggressive in the brilliance of the products we deliver, in the innovation. Already there is a ton of work going on in Nokia to take everything we do several big steps further and we will keep doing that."

With iOS and Android enjoying their sweet success at the top, Windows does have it's work cut out for it. But remember, things can change very quickly in the industry and consumers are a very fickle bunch. One thing is for sure though, Windows powered Nokia smartphones will be grabbing some attention in 2012. It's going to be quite a year.
